Luis González maintains parallel careers as conductor, chorus master and baritone soloist in a variety of opera, musical theatre and concert repertoire. Since 2015, he has served as Associate Director and Assistant Conductor for Choral Artists of Sarasota, where he works closely with Artistic Director Dr. Joseph Holt to refine all aspects of the ensemble’s artistry—with special attention to musical preparation, foreign language diction and optimum vocal production.

During Choral Artists of Sarasota’s 2018—19 season, Luis rehearses several programs featuring major works, including Handel’s The King Shall Rejoice, Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Schoenberg’s rarely-heard Friede auf Erden. Additional credits from recent seasons include Bach’s Mass in B minor, Brahms’ Zigeunerlieder and Liebesliederwalzer (Conductor), Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Romancero gitano, Duruflé’s Requiem, Haydn’s Creation, Larsen’s chamber opera Barnum’s Bird (singing the role of Giovanni Belletti), Mendelssohn’s Vom Himmel Hoch, Orff’s Carmina burana, Poulenc’s Gloria, Saint-Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio, Verdi’s Requiem and Christianson/Anderson’s Too Hot to Handel: The Gospel Messiah.

Prior to his tenure with Choral Artists of Sarasota, Luis served as Chorus Master for two seasons at St. Petersburg Opera where his projects included new productions of West Side Story, Roméo et Juliette, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Norma, Pagliacci, Turandot and concert performances of Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols.

As baritone soloist, Luis has performed throughout the United States with various opera companies and concert organizations, including Crested Butte Music Festival, Opera San José, Bronx Opera, The Metropolitan Opera Guild, Opera Tampa, St. Petersburg Opera, The Florida Orchestra and Sarasota Festival of Vocal Arts. Solo engagements during the current season include The Gardener in Opera Tampa’s world-premiere production of Anton Coppola’s Lady Swanwhite; selections from Trouble in Tahiti, Candide, West Side Story, Wonderful Town and On the Town for an all-Bernstein concert at First Coast Opera; baritone soloist for The Orchestra Sings with Venice Symphony and a recital debut with soprano Johanna Fincher for Sarasota Music Club.

A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Luis earned his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance at San José State University and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is an alumnus of several opera young artist programs including those of St. Petersburg Opera, Crested Butte Music Festival, AIMS in Graz Festival and Sherrill Milnesʼ VOICExperience. He currently resides in St. Petersburg, FL where he maintains a private vocal studio and prepares singers of all ages for upcoming auditions, competitions and other singing engagements. He is honored to help the next generation of artists discover their gifts and has worked with actors, voice students and choirs at numerous educational institutions, including Shorecrest Preparatory School, Manatee School for the Arts, State College of Florida and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
